Most wall mounts have slots on the mounts to compensate the for wall studs. Some mounts will slide to compensate centering. Your mount should’ve came with all the hardware to mount on any type of surface. You don’t have to install a piece of pylwood on the back, unless your remodling the room. Just support the mount on a stud. If you install plywood, the flat panel will not look "tight" to the wall You can use maybe a 1 inch to 1 1/2 screw with a 5/8" head or 7/16" and washers. Use a ratchet and socket to tighten. Don’t forget a level to make sure it’s straight and lock it in place, if it came with a long "allen" wrench. Make sure your mount will hold more than what your plasma weighs. Good Luck!

Yes, it depends on the weight of your TV. 3/4 plywood is probably good. If you want to stain it, instead of paint it, get some veneer plywood. Then it will look like furniture.
