What's the best way to Fill the space above a fireplace that was made for 34" tube tv?

My living room has a space that was built in above the fireplace that was perfect for holding our old 34" tv. We’ve recently got a 50" plasma and I want to mount it on the wall in the same spot. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to fill this spot? Studs? Plaster? I need to make it sturdy enough to hold the mounting bracket and TV.

Put all the hardware for it in the hole and put the new TV right over the top of the hole.

I’m no expert but the first thing i would is place a frame work in the recess that would support the TV then slab the the wall with plasterboard making sure u mark where the frame work is good luck

Tough question to answer without knowing how the opening is framed. I would check to see if there are any studs behind the shelf. If there are, you could easy get a swivel mount that has an arm. The arm would allow you to extend from the back of the shelf to the front. You can use the 50" flat panel to cover up the hole!! Then you would not need to do any new framing or construction to fill in the shelf opening. The Omnimount that I have for our 50" can extend (2 ft) and swivel (70 degrees to the side and 10 degrees up and down). Peerless, Omnimount and a host of other manufacturers have mounts for LCD, plasma in all sizes and types. Here’s a link: http://www.mountsandmore.com

    Good luck!

I would make up a wooden frame in a manner that provides timber in the places you will need for the mounting bracket (s)
